AP Math Classes: What They Are, Why They Matter, and How to Succeed

Four AP math exams in May 2027: AP Calculus AB and BC on Monday, May 10 (morning, 42 multiple-choice and 6 free-response questions), AP Precalculus on Tuesday, May 11 (morning, 42 and 4), and AP Statistics on Tuesday, May 11 (afternoon, fully digital, 42 and 4).

Short answer: There are four AP math courses: AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. Each ends in a College Board exam in May, scored 1 to 5, and many U.S. colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or higher. Success comes from steady practice, mastering non-calculator skills and rehearsing timed free-response questions.

The 2026–27 school year brings real changes: new question counts and timing on Calculus and Precalculus, and a revised, fully digital AP Statistics exam. If you studied from older materials, some of what you know about the format is out of date.

Key points

  • Four AP math courses: Precalculus, Calculus AB, Calculus BC and Statistics each match a specific college course.
  • May 2027 dates: Calculus AB and BC are on Monday, May 10; Precalculus and Statistics are on Tuesday, May 11.
  • No-calculator still matters: Calculus and Precalculus mix calculator-required and no-calculator parts, so algebra fluency counts.
  • Statistics goes digital: AP Statistics is fully digital for May 2027, with 42 multiple-choice and 4 free-response questions.
  • Credit at 3 or higher: Many U.S. colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or above, but each college sets its own policy.
  • Mistakes are data: Finding out why you missed a problem is the fastest way to stop missing it.
  • 4 AP math courses
  • 42 multiple-choice questions on each AP math exam
  • May 10 2027 AP Calculus AB and BC exams
  • 82% of 2026 AP Calculus BC students scored 3 or higher

What are the AP math classes?

College Board offers four AP math courses. They differ in content, pace and the kind of thinking they reward.

AP Precalculus

Equivalent to a college precalculus course or college algebra with trigonometry. The course has four units, but only Units 1 to 3 appear on the AP Exam:

  • Unit 1: Polynomial and Rational Functions
  • Unit 2: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  • Unit 3: Trigonometric and Polar Functions
  • Unit 4: Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices (not assessed on the exam)

AP Calculus AB

Equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course. Its eight units run from limits and continuity through derivatives, integration, differential equations and applications of integration.

AP Calculus BC

Equivalent to first-semester calculus plus the next single-variable calculus course. BC includes all of AB plus two more units:

  • Unit 9: Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions
  • Unit 10: Infinite Sequences and Series

AP Statistics

Equivalent to a one-semester, introductory, non-calculus-based college statistics course. For 2026–27 it was reorganized into five units, and the recommended prerequisite is now a first-year algebra course. College Board’s AP Statistics revision summary lists the topics removed, including the geometric distribution and the chi-square goodness of fit test.

What is the format of each AP math exam in 2027?

These are the May 2027 formats published on College Board’s AP Central exam pages, such as the AP Calculus AB exam page.

What changed for May 2027?

  • Calculus AB and BC: multiple-choice Part A went from 30 to 29 questions (now 62 minutes) and Part B from 15 to 13 questions (now 38 minutes).
  • Precalculus: the number of multiple-choice questions, free-response questions 1 and 2, and section timing were all updated.
  • Statistics: multiple choice rose from 40 to 42 questions with 4 answer choices instead of 5, and free response dropped from 6 to 4 questions.

What is the AP calculator policy?

All four exams allow the Desmos graphing calculator built into Bluebook, and College Board’s calculator policy lets students bring up to two approved handheld graphing calculators.

  • On Calculus AB, Calculus BC and Precalculus, Desmos is available only in the calculator-required parts.
  • On AP Statistics, a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected, and nongraphing calculators are not allowed.

When are the AP math exams in 2027?

College Board has published the 2027 AP Exam schedule. Exams run over two weeks in May: May 3–7 and May 10–14, 2027.

  • AP Calculus AB and BC: Monday, May 10, 2027, Session 1 (typically morning)
  • AP Precalculus: Tuesday, May 11, 2027, Session 1 (typically morning)
  • AP Statistics: Tuesday, May 11, 2027, Session 2 (typically afternoon)

Late-testing dates exist for students who cannot test during the main window.

Tutor tip: If you are taking both Precalculus and Statistics, you will sit two exams on May 11. Do at least one practice day with a morning and an afternoon timed session back to back.

How many students score a 3 or higher?

College Board’s 2026 score distributions for the AP math exams:

Exam (2026)543213 or higher
AP Precalculus29%29%24%11%7%82%
AP Calculus AB20%28%17%24%11%65%
AP Calculus BC46%22%14%14%4%82%
AP Statistics17%23%22%17%21%62%

These numbers reflect who takes each exam as much as how hard it is, so use them as context rather than as a difficulty ranking.

Where do AP math students lose points?

Most lost points in calculus trace back to algebra and trigonometry, not calculus itself. Our curriculum notes for senior-year math flag two topics in particular.

  • Trig identities: our tutors call them “a huge sticking point for a lot of students.” They show up in Precalculus Unit 3 and again whenever a calculus problem needs simplifying.
  • Limits and continuity: in Precalculus, this is “the biggest topic that will be carried over to calculus.” It is also Unit 1 of AP Calculus AB and BC.
  • Algebra under time pressure: factoring, exponent rules, fractions and unit-circle values need to be automatic for the no-calculator parts.

If those feel shaky, our guides on 12th grade math essentials and preparing for college math cover the skills that carry forward.

Tutor tip: Before AP Calculus starts, spend part of the summer reviewing trig identities and limits from Precalculus. It is far easier to fix them in August than in the middle of a derivatives unit.

How do you succeed in AP math?

Learn from every mistake

Checking whether an answer is right is not the same as knowing why it was wrong. The habit that separates strong AP students is going back to a missed problem and finding the exact step that failed.

“You never learn to search for what the problem is. Error analysis is very important for growth.”

Jake Gerhardt, Alexander Tutoring math tutor

Tutor tip: Keep an error log. For each missed problem, write the topic, the step where it went wrong and whether it was a concept gap, an algebra slip or a misread question. Patterns show up within a few weeks.

Show your reasoning on free response

Free-response graders score the work, not just the final number. A short example from a no-calculator calculus question: find the slope of f(x) = x³ − 4x at x = 2.

  1. Differentiate: f′(x) = 3x² − 4.
  2. Evaluate: f′(2) = 3(2)² − 4 = 12 − 4 = 8.
  3. State the answer in context: the tangent line at x = 2 has slope 8.

Writing each step this way earns partial credit even when an arithmetic slip creeps in.

Practice in the real format

  • Get comfortable with the Bluebook app and its built-in Desmos calculator well before May.
  • Time free-response sets with the 2027 timings, not older practice-book timings.
  • For Statistics, practice writing complete free-response answers in a digital text box, since paper booklets are gone.
  • Review multiple-choice strategy; our multiple-choice test-taking strategies apply directly.

Study in short, regular sessions

  • Work a few problems most days rather than cramming before unit tests.
  • Try a timed method such as 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break.
  • Keep a running list of formulas and the mistakes you make most often. Our guide on how to memorize math formulas helps with the first part.

Use AI as a scaffold, not a shortcut

AI chatbots can explain a step or generate extra practice, but they cannot take the exam for you. Students who lean on them for every homework problem often find the gap on test day.

“It’s a very powerful tool, it’s a misunderstood tool, and it’s an overused tool. I think it’s making students rely too heavily on it, when it can be a scaffold to learn, but not a replacement for learning.”

Jake Gerhardt, Alexander Tutoring math tutor
  • Attempt the problem yourself first, on paper.
  • Use AI to check a step or explain a concept you already tried, not to produce the full solution.
  • Rework any AI-assisted problem from scratch the next day without help.

Get help early

AP math courses build on themselves, so a gap in October becomes a bigger gap by March. A good tutor will diagnose where points are being lost, explain concepts in more than one way and assign targeted practice. Look for someone with real experience in the specific AP course, not just general math.
