Math and Physics Tutors Who Know Los Angeles Schools
Your student isn’t “bad at math” — one bad experience convinced them they were. Our specialty is rewriting that narrative into one of confidence, wonder, and joy.

Everything changes when math empowers students

It’s not tutoring. It’s becoming. Behind every “I’m bad at math” is a student who stopped believing they could figure it out. That belief is the real problem — and it’s the one we solve.

The Alexander Difference
Passion + Purpose = Empowered
When math serves your student’s passion, it has purpose. When it has purpose, something remarkable happens — they become empowered to use education to achieve their dreams.
Personalized Matching = Student Passion
We start by learning what lights your student up — music, sports, art, science, anything. Then we match them with a tutor who shares that passion and shows them how math is the hidden engine behind the things they already love. When math serves something they care about, it stops being a chore.
Deep Understanding = Purpose
Most students survive math by memorizing formulas — until one curveball on the test sinks them. We teach the why behind every equation, deriving formulas and connecting them to the real world. When your student truly understands the math, they can solve anything a teacher throws at them.
Confidence First = Empowers Students
There’s no such thing as being ‘bad at math’ — only bad math experiences. A harsh teacher, embarrassment in class, one bad test — and suddenly your student decides they can’t do it. We rewrite that story. With a supportive tutor who believes in them, ‘I can’t’ becomes ‘I’ve got this.’
Everything changed for these families.
My daughter has struggled with math for a long time and has had many tutors over the years. We started with James at Alexander tutoring the beginning of 11th grade and, for the very first time, she got an “A” in math class. She was so proud of herself! James is kind, friendly and patient and is a great match for my daughter. The entire team at Alexander tutoring is helpful and easily reachable. I am so glad we found them.
Alexander tutoring has been a wonderful resource for my son as he navigates high school math. His instructors, Gerald, quickly established a great rapport with him and they were able to get to work right away. My son's grades and confidence improved with Gerald's support. We look forward to working with him in the future as well. We have had substitute teachers when Gerald wasn't available and they were all wonderful. So it looks like you can't go wrong with anyone at Alexander tutoring. I highly recommend this business to give your children a leg up in math .
Alexander Tutoring was great to work with, and the math tutor they assigned to my daughter, Caleb, was fantastic. He helped her with the strategies and confidence that allowed her to bring her Math SAT score up, demonstrably. Highly recommended
We have had an exemplary experience with Alexander Tutoring. My son, Nate, has told me that Rebecca Malas (Chemistry) was able to connect to his visual way of learning. James Magnatta (Pre Calculus) was excellent at breaking down confusing concepts to make them comprehensible. Jill, the "Mission Control Specialist", is always warm, accessible, helpful and easy to work with. Call Alexander if your child needs help. You will not be disappointed.
My daughter loves working with her Alexander mathematics tutor, Angelique, a professional with exceptional talent for clearly explaining math concepts, who is always encouraging and fun. The sessions are tailored exactly to my daughter's learning goals, and I've seen her grow both in confidence and insight as Angelique guides her in mastering new material and problem solving techniques.
We signed up for a trial with Sam for our daughter. He was awesome and we have now signed her up for the entire summer schedule. Sam has a really nice and easy communication style and once he found out that my daughter loves soccer he added a lot of soccer themes to his teaching (angles, corners, distance etc.). My daughter really liked his style and she was more than happy to continue with Sam as her tutor. My daughter is entering middle school and she needs a confidence boost in Math and Sam provided a great platform for that.
My son struggled with organization and a few concepts before entering 7th grade. After a hiccup with another tutor, Sean really connected with him and helped get him back on track. So far, his grades are great and my son regained his love for the science and confidence when doing math.
My son has had two excellent math tutors (6th grade math) from Alexander Tutoring. His favorite tutor by far is Wilder -- he has an approach that makes my son feel comfortable and makes the subject matter not intimidating and approachable. Many tutors from other agencies have been condescending or unable to connect with our son who struggles in math -- Sean hires tutors that are the exact opposite -- our son is more confident following his tutoring sessions because of that. In addition, Sean runs the company very well, the sessions are organized, calendared with no cancellations for us so far. Any potential changes are communicated way in advance. thank you Sean for running a great organization! well worth the investment!
Finding the right teachers/tutors for my son is not always easy, as he has dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. A lot of educators just don't get it. To that end, I typically, use tutors who work exclusively with kids with learning differences. But I decided to take a gamble on Sean and it paid off. My son was failing Algebra before we started tutoring. We are now going into finals with a chance for an A in the class.
Sean is wonderful, he is able to communicate in such a way that our son gets it the first time around. I found Sean about 2 years ago when my husband and I struggled to understand Common Core as our son was having great difficulties understanding it. Sean did amazing work in getting our son to understand Common Core and soon our son was getting A's in Algebra. Last year, we returned to Sean to help prep for the High School Placement Test (HSPT) required as part of the admission into catholic high school. Sean not only successfully prepared our son for the HSPT, but also gave advice on taking the timed exam. This year, we returned to Sean as our son needed a little help in Geometry and Physics - Sean is simply a rock star! Thank you Sean for your effective communications and tutoring skills!
Sean Alexander has provided my son with excellent tutoring in Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and Honors Physics. Sean's personal attention, patience and experience have allowed my son to unlock great potential in sciences. My son was used to maintain decent grades although he had some difficulties with abstract subjects. Thanks to Sean's ability to pinpoint and focus on weaker areas, as well as to apply multiple real-life examples to problems, my son has developed a profound interest in these subjects, excelled in exams, and chosen, with true confidence, to focus on sciences in college.
We needed some additional math tutoring support for my daughter. Had a really positive experience for pre-calculus and hope to continue for AP calculus next. The coordinator worked with us to help identify the best match tutor - and our daughter ended up being the top student in class.
Sean is fantastic, couldn't recommend him more highly. He tutored my daughter her sophomore year of high school, and we will continue with him through junior year. My daughter was struggling in math, having trouble connecting with her teacher, and feeling generally overwhelmed. Sean was like our secret weapon - she finished out sophomore year with an A. More importantly, her attitude and confidence has transformed - she feels capable, with a positive outlook on the subject. Other bonus points: 1. Flexible on scheduling. Always able to accommodate last minute requests. Very recently, met my daughter close to home for a last minute cram session for an unexpected assessment test.2. Offered a 1:1 summer math program - a great option for us. My daughter is now ahead of the curve, by studying calculus in the summer months. And, my daughter *requested* doing the summer program (I didn't push her - you can imagine my surprise). 3. Sean's tutoring style really resonates with my daughter - she looks forward to the sessions, I don't have to nag/force her to go. Her consistent feedback to me is 100% positive.
My son began tutoring for math his sophomore year in high school. His high school teachers were great, but were not able to provide the depth and level of support that was needed to be successful in the course, while providing learning beyond the textbook. His grade went from a C- to an A- within the year he was tutoring. Currently in his junior year, he is averaging an A in the second trimester in a dual enrollment college algebra course with the help of Alexander Tutoring. His confidence in math has accelerated to a point where he is planning to take a dual enrollment college calculus course next year as a senior in high school. His growth and understanding in math would not have emerged without the support of Alexander Tutoring. I highly recommend them and their tutoring services.
We were looking for something to supplement our child's math over the summer, especially with school closing prematurely. Alexander Mathematics was recommended and when we reached out they called back promptly and helped us pick out a good option to help finish out the year. They quickly worked out that our child needed something more challenging and moved him to a more advanced course (pre-Calculus) that kept him busy. He felt the tutors did a great job explaining math and helping him work at his own pace. Overall it was a great experience and they were easy to work with. Would highly recommend and use them again. Everything was via zoom given the pandemic and it worked well. It prepared our child well for more summer math at an online college that will help him skip a class when school resumes.
Studying with Harmony made such a big difference for my daughter at school. She was discouraged from taking higher-level math last year, and had to advocate strongly for herself to get that placement. She was pretty intimidated at the start of the school year and doubting whether she'd made the right call. As well, there were a few boys who were dominating the conversation. She's stuck it out now, speaks up in class, and is excelling. I know it was valuable for her to see a female role model handling math with grace, and she enjoyed Harmony's company as well. Thanks Harmony!
The last time I took a math class was in high school, which was eight years ago. Even then, I never received a grade higher than a “D” in any math class. I recently started College again, and my major requires a good amount of math classes, beginning with Trigonometry. I knew I would struggle without extra help, and that's when I found Alexander Tutoring. I started with Alexander Sheynis before my Trig class began. He helped me to build strong algebraic foundations first. He sent me a ton of worksheets to complete each week and was always available to answer any short questions through email, which was nice, so then we could focus on tougher questions during tutoring time. He was accommodating and good at making sure all work was done accurately. He cared about making sure I understood the “why” and was extremely thorough with his explanations. When I started class, we would go over the material taught that week, and if I understood it, he would teach me shortcuts and tricks to use. He was very encouraging and always brought me up when I would talk negatively about my math skills. Now I’m tutoring with Dexter Dysthe! I find it hard to find a teacher, especially in math, that can explain the material in a way my brain can comprehend. With Dexter, I always understand what he is saying, and he explains topics simply and effectively. I enjoy his mnemonics, which make it easy to remember essential formulas. I find myself saying, “oh! I didn’t know that!” a lot during our sessions. He seems to catch crucial information left out of my professor's lectures. He is very easy to talk to and makes math enjoyable. I am so thankful for these tutors. I have gotten an A on every exam and quiz thus far! I never thought that was possible for me. It’s truly an amazing and exciting feeling to understand a subject I have struggled with for so many years. Thank you, Alexander Tutoring!!
A truly excellent service! They get the job done and more. Really experienced, engaged, and knowledgeable tutors. Highly recommend.

Most tutoring gets a student through Friday’s test. That’s not what we’re for.
Your student learns where every formula comes from — so a problem they’ve never seen stops being a threat. They stop asking whether something will be on the test and start asking why it works.
What makes your math and physics tutors different?
Your student works with a practicing mathematician, physicist, or engineer — someone who uses this material professionally, not a college student a chapter ahead in the textbook. We recruit nationally because that’s the only way to find them.
What that means for an LA family:
- Tutors with graduate-level training and professional research experience
- A derivation-first method — nothing gets memorized that could be understood instead
- Nightly office hours, so homework help doesn’t wait for the next session
- More than 15 years serving Los Angeles families, with 270+ reviews across Google and Yelp
- First-time A’s in Calculus and 700+ SAT Math scores
We work with students at Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Brentwood School, Chaminade College Preparatory, de Toledo, The Science Academy STEM Magnet, North Hollywood High, Verdugo Hills and El Segundo High, and across LA’s colleges and universities.
Every session is one-on-one and online — which is the point. A family in Sherman Oaks gets the same working physicist as a family in Brentwood, with no drive across the city for either of you.
How do you match a student with the right tutor?
Nobody’s first session is really about math. It’s about finding out whether this person is going to make them feel stupid again.
Our tutors are matched on personality and interest before subject — a physicist who races bikes, a mathematician who plays in a band. When the match is right, a student stops bracing and starts asking questions. That’s the moment the tutoring actually begins.
If it isn’t right, you get another match at no cost, as many times as it takes. About 80% of our students click on the first try, 95% by the second.
What math and physics subjects do you tutor?
Every level of math and physics, from foundational arithmetic through university coursework, plus chemistry at the high school and AP level:
- Pre-Algebra and Algebra I & II
- Geometry and Trigonometry
- Precalculus and Calculus (including AP Calculus AB & BC)
- Statistics and AP Statistics
- Physics, AP Physics 1, 2, and C
- Chemistry and AP Chemistry
- SAT and ACT Math, plus ISEE math for independent school admissions
- College-level math and physics, including UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and Santa Monica College
- Adult learners returning to math
Sessions are one-on-one and online, built around your student rather than a fixed curriculum. We start by finding out where the gaps actually are, then work forward from there.
What students end up with: they enjoy math, they understand concepts deeply rather than memorizing them, and they’re the ones showing friends how to work a problem — which is the real confidence marker.
Lessons line up with what your student’s school teaches, based on California’s Mathematics Framework. For grade-by-grade detail, see our guides to 7th grade math, 8th grade math standards and 9th grade Algebra 1, or see all of our California tutoring locations.
Do you tutor elementary school math in Los Angeles?
Yes. We’ve worked with young learners from Los Angeles elementary schools like Brentwood School, Mirman School, The Willows Community School and The Center for Early Education — where academic standards are high and families invest early in a child’s confidence.
Many young students struggle with math not because they can’t do it, but because of a single discouraging moment: being put on the spot in class, getting lost after a school transfer, or falling behind in a fast-paced classroom.
We match students with real mathematicians and physicists who specialize in breaking complex ideas into accessible lessons. Our elementary sessions focus on:
- Addition & subtraction
- Multiplication & division
- Fractions
- Confidence-building drills and assessments
Once students feel safe and capable, math becomes fun — and progress follows quickly.
Do you tutor middle school math and ISEE prep?
Yes. Our LA middle schoolers come from Harvard-Westlake, The Center for Early Education, Windward School and others.
In Los Angeles, middle school math decides two different doors. The independents — Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Brentwood, Windward — admit on the ISEE, whose math sections test reasoning rather than recall. And LAUSD’s magnet programs, including The Science Academy STEM Magnet and North Hollywood’s highly gifted magnet, run on a points-based application where math placement matters well before ninth grade.
Both reward the same thing: a student who understands what they’re doing rather than one who has memorized a year of procedures.
Key topics we focus on:
- Algebraic expressions and equations
- Integers and rational numbers
- Ratios, proportions, percent
- Order of operations
- Central tendency and data interpretation
We don’t teach shortcuts. We teach understanding. Our tutors emphasize deriving formulas and grasping mathematical logic, which is what both selection processes are actually measuring.
Which Los Angeles high school math and physics courses do you cover?
This is the bulk of our LA work. Students attending Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Brentwood School, Loyola High School, Crossroads School, The Archer School for Girls, Chaminade College Preparatory and de Toledo encounter some of the most rigorous academic standards in the country — and we work just as much with students at The Science Academy STEM Magnet, North Hollywood High, Verdugo Hills and El Segundo High, where the challenge is more often class size than pace.
To succeed — and prepare for college admissions — students must master:
- Algebra I & II
- Geometry and Trigonometry
- Precalculus & Calculus
- AP Calculus AB & BC, AP Statistics
- Physics, AP Physics 1, 2 and C
- Chemistry and AP Chemistry
- SAT & ACT Math
- College-level math prep
We go beyond test prep. We teach students how to derive what they’re learning — so they understand the why, not just the how. That’s what holds up when a problem doesn’t look like the homework.
Our SAT and ACT Masterclasses are especially popular with Los Angeles families.
Preparing for admissions tests? Read how to improve an SAT math score or see our SAT and ACT tutoring.
Do you tutor college math?
Yes. College math courses at UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount University and Santa Monica College can be fast-paced and unforgiving. Oversized lectures and limited TA time leave students overwhelmed and unsure where to turn — and the same is true for LA students who’ve left for programs elsewhere.
Our tutors — real scientists and mathematicians — are experts in:
- College Algebra
- Geometry & Trigonometry
- Finite Math
- Statistics
- Calculus I, II, III
- Linear Algebra
- Physics for STEM Majors
We’ve helped pre-med students, engineering majors and business students navigate demanding coursework with clarity. Sessions are patient, personalized and focused on long-term understanding rather than last-minute survival.
Because sessions are online, students keep the same tutor when they leave for school. The first college math course is where most of the damage happens, and continuity through it is worth a great deal.
Do you tutor adults returning to math?
Los Angeles professionals often return to math to pivot into tech, re-enter school, or prepare for professional certifications. We work with adults from industries like entertainment, healthcare, real estate, and finance—helping them regain math fluency in a pressure-free environment.
Whether you’re:
- Taking math prerequisites for nursing or grad school
- Preparing for the GRE or other entrance exams
- Transitioning into data science or coding
- Just trying to feel confident with math again
Our tutors will design a personalized learning path built around your schedule, goals, and current level. From basic algebra to advanced calculus or physics, we support adult learners with patience, clarity, and respect.
At Alexander Tutoring, we know it’s never too late to conquer math—and we’re here to help every step of the way.
