Math and Physics Tutors Who Know Chicago Schools
Your student isn’t “bad at math” — one bad experience convinced them they were. Our specialty is rewriting that narrative into one of confidence, wonder, and joy.

Everything changes when math empowers students
It’s not tutoring. It’s becoming. Behind every “I’m bad at math” is a student who stopped believing they could figure it out. That belief is the real problem — and it’s the one we solve.

The Alexander Difference
Passion + Purpose = Empowered
When math serves your student’s passion, it has purpose. When it has purpose, something remarkable happens — they become empowered to use education to achieve their dreams.
Personalized Matching = Student Passion
We start by learning what lights your student up — music, sports, art, science, anything. Then we match them with a tutor who shares that passion and shows them how math is the hidden engine behind the things they already love. When math serves something they care about, it stops being a chore.
Deep Understanding = Purpose
Most students survive math by memorizing formulas — until one curveball on the test sinks them. We teach the why behind every equation, deriving formulas and connecting them to the real world. When your student truly understands the math, they can solve anything a teacher throws at them.
Confidence First = Empowers Students
There’s no such thing as being ‘bad at math’ — only bad math experiences. A harsh teacher, embarrassment in class, one bad test — and suddenly your student decides they can’t do it. We rewrite that story. With a supportive tutor who believes in them, ‘I can’t’ becomes ‘I’ve got this.’
Everything changed for these families.
I am telling you: If *my* rising 8th grader can do well in math after working with an Alexander Math tutor, anyone will. She worked with Gerald all summer, which she was less than delighted to hear when we told her about it, but she quickly stopped complaining after they started their work together. Last night she told us that she'd like to KEEP working with him once school starts so she doesn't fall behind. What? Thank you Gerald and Sean for giving her the confidence to go back to school this week feeling confident.
Gerald has been amazing for my son to work with. He is always on time, courteous and ready to support my son in his challenges with Geometry. He does homework review and test prep during his sessions with my son and it has been very helpful in all of us getting through the school year. Thank you, Gerald... you are appreciated!
My son's experience with James M. for AP calculus tutoring was excellent. My teen son is not one to express enthusiasm for much of anything, but nonetheless he made a point of telling me what a really good teacher James is, and even told me once that I should sit in on a session to see for myself. The partnership with AT more than paid off in my son's grades and, more importantly, his mastery of the concepts.
My daughter's self-confidence was really at a low ebb in chemistry and math, and it showed in her grades and teacher comments. Rebecca was an amazing tutor and really got her focus and study skills sharpened in a very short period of time. I would say this tutoring service is on the pricey side, but absolutely worth it.
My daughter has been getting tutoring from Sam for a couple months now. He is nice and friendly. He explains math well and makes it easy to understand. She now understands math a lot better. He is also very supportive. My daughter always looks forward to the sessions.
My daughter has been working with Jonathan from Alexander tutor. She's being tutored with AP Physics, and Jonathan has been such a great instructor. He has the best way in helping my daughters. He's very patient, very kind, very encouraging and always goes the extra mile to help my daughter. I have seen how she looks forward to tutoring with Jonathan and how her stress level has gone down towards the end of her 1st Junior semester! We are so appreciative for Alexander tutoring services. And so excited that my daughter was paired with such beautiful, compassionate and understanding human being, Mr. Jonathan! Thank you, Alexander Tutoring! Erica (0/21/2020)
Charlie Wu worked really well with our daughter on SAT Math. He's very smart but didn't talk down to her and explained things clearly and concisely. Money well spent! Also Sean Alexander was great. Very accommodating and flexible in scheduling times that worked for us
Our daughter wanted to improve her SAT math score and was willing to do test prep. In order to target her weaker areas in the time frame she had, we decided 1:1 tutoring would be the most efficient way to go. Sean was great to work with on the admin side. The tutoring sites were convenient and safe. Our daughter said her tutor, Olivia, explained things very clearly plus she was really nice and patient. Her SAT score went up 120 points overall and her math score went up 70 points. It worked for us because of excellent tutoring combined with the extra work my daughter put in between the tutoring sessions. Highly recommend.
My child had a wonderful experience with SA tutoring this summer. Chase was reluctant and not at all enthusiastic about doing work over the summer. His tutor Olivia not only made it fun and interesting but also helped him with his summer homework. This has made Chase feel more comfortable about entering the 7th grade, feeling caught up on his work but also having a better grasp on what is to be expected in this next year. In addition I appreciated their willingness to work with our schedule, and their options on different meeting locations in the city.I highly recommend Sean Alexander to anyone looking for good, solid tutoring help.
This guys is terrific. Thanks to Sean, my son went from being nervous and unsure of himself to confident and ahead of the class. He is exploring new concepts and really has come to love math as a subject. I thank Sean for helping to instill a love of the subject and a joy in learning it!
Sean worked with my 9th grade daughter this year and helped her achieve good performance in both Physics and Geometry/Math. He was flexible and easy to work with and my daughter gained confidence and improved her grades consistently over the school term.
Our son took some very challenging math and physics classes, with a mixed bag of teacher quality and support at his public high school....some teachers, were beyond outstanding, and some not very good at all. Understanding how important a solid grasp in math and physics would be, given our son's interest in engineering at the time, we decided to find a tutor that could support him along the way. We wanted to ensure he wouldn't suddenly fall behind and unravel his strong efforts to learn the material at school. Luckily, we found Alexander Tutoring. Sean Alexander was compiling a stellar team of tutors, carefully vetting each one. As a freshman in high school, our son was tutored by Nikki, who did a fantastic job supporting him through Geometry. Due to a scheduling conflict after that, our son was paired with Wilder, who tutored him for the remaining 3 years of high school math and physics. Over that time he took all of the highest level AP calculus, AP statistics, and AP physics classes and met with Wilder once a week.I can't thank Sean and Wilder enough for the exceptional experience and support our son received those last few years. Week after week, he looked forward to his tutoring sessions with Wilder, delving into particularly vexing problems that he could not work out on his own. Wilder's expertise was truly impressive, and his teaching approach was fantastic, not only shedding light on those confounding problems but also inspiring our son to continually learn more. That inspiration to elevate his understanding further, ultimately lead our son to a free MIT online program (not for credit, just to learn). The MIT test he took, indicated that his knowledge of the material was exceptionally high. He also received 5s on every AP calculus, statistics, and physics exam he took and performed very well on his university math and physics entrance exams where he tested into honors physics and an equally high level of math. Although our son is no longer terribly interested in engineering, he is still passionately interested in math and physics and I feel pretty confident that those subjects will play an important role in his future career. I can definitely thank Wilder and Alexander Tutoring for helping to develop and nurture our son's interest in those subjects. Rather than having a stressful experience with math and physics in high school, he grew to love them and now studies them simply because they are intellectually stimulating and "fun".
Caleb has really helped my senior prepare for her Calc AP test. She's very confident and it was exactly the boost she needs!
Good experience with my son. They are excellent and professional. My son enjoys his time with the tutor and connecting with him. Alexander tutoring is a good way for my son to learn. My son's tutor is very professional and a nice person. Gracias
We took an opportunity last year to have our 8th grader participate in a tutoring program outside of school. This group of highly educated folks were a hit for my son and a success for his math grade. They fill up quick but they definitely worked hard to find us an opening or even make an opportunity happen for us. They have a straight forward upfront no gimmick operation. My son's grade did improve and I would recommend my children going back to them.
My daughter has gained a lot from the tutor she works with, and she plans to continue working with him for years to come. The sessions are pricey, but I know that she’s getting excellent instruction.
Sean was fantastic helping our daughter through a challenging Lowell Algebra/Trig class. He was helpful and patient and brought my daughter's grade up three levels in three months.
Thank you for helping Madison with physics. She has not only gained skills but her confidence as well. We feel so lucky to have your expertise.

Most tutoring gets a student through Friday’s test. That’s not what we’re for.
Your student learns where every formula comes from — so a problem they’ve never seen stops being a threat. They stop asking whether something will be on the test and start asking why it works.
What makes your math and physics tutors different?
Your student works with a practicing mathematician, physicist, or engineer — someone who uses this material professionally, not a college student a chapter ahead in the textbook. We recruit nationally because that’s the only way to find them.
What that means in practice:
- Tutors with graduate-level training and professional research experience
- A derivation-first method — nothing gets memorized that could be understood instead
- Nightly office hours, so homework help doesn’t wait for the next session
- More than 15 years of one-on-one tutoring, with 270+ reviews across Google and Yelp
- First-time A’s in Calculus and 700+ SAT Math scores
Our work in Chicago spans schools including Latin School, Walter Payton College Prep, Whitney Young, the University of Chicago, Northwestern and DePaul.
Every session is one-on-one and online, which is why it doesn’t matter where you are. We match on subject, personality and interest rather than zip code. If the fit isn’t right, you get another match at no cost, as many times as it takes.
How do you match a student with the right tutor?
Nobody’s first session is really about math. It’s about finding out whether this person is going to make them feel stupid again.
Our tutors are matched on personality and interest before subject — a physicist who races bikes, a mathematician who plays in a band. When the match is right, a student stops bracing and starts asking questions. That’s the moment the tutoring actually begins.
If it isn’t right, you get another match at no cost, as many times as it takes. About 80% of our students click on the first try, 95% by the second.
