Math and Physics Tutors Who Know Marin Schools

Your student isn’t “bad at math” — one bad experience convinced them they were. Our specialty is rewriting that narrative into one of confidence, wonder, and joy.

“I have LITERALLY watched frustration melt into absolute understanding of the subject.” — Patrick R., Parent

Everything changes when math empowers students

Student-in-astronaut-helmet-with-gold-aviator-sunglasses-looking-up-alexander-tutoring

It’s not tutoring. It’s becoming. Behind every “I’m bad at math” is a student who stopped believing they could figure it out. That belief is the real problem — and it’s the one we solve.

Our students have been accepted to Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, and Cornell.

When Math Changes Their Future, the Future Changes for Everyone

This is what it looks like.

In 3 minutes, see why we believe math and physics aren’t just school subjects — they’re the keys to everything your student dreams about.

The Alexander Difference

Passion + Purpose = Empowered

When math serves your student’s passion, it has purpose. When it has purpose, something remarkable happens — they become empowered to use education to achieve their dreams.

Read our four-year study of Passion + Purpose tutoring →

Personalized Matching = Student Passion

We start by learning what lights your student up — music, sports, art, science, anything. Then we match them with a tutor who shares that passion and shows them how math is the hidden engine behind the things they already love. When math serves something they care about, it stops being a chore.

“Once he found out that my daughter loves soccer, he added a lot of soccer themes to his teaching — angles, corners, distance. She was more than happy to continue with Sam as her tutor.”

— Mihir M., Parent (Google)

Deep Understanding = Purpose

Most students survive math by memorizing formulas — until one curveball on the test sinks them. We teach the why behind every equation, deriving formulas and connecting them to the real world. When your student truly understands the math, they can solve anything a teacher throws at them.

“After the first session he came home and could not stop talking about Physics. Last week he came home from class literally jumping up and down — he’d been able to explain a process as one of the only ones because Tyler had explained it to him the day before.”

— Yasmin D., Parent (Google)

Confidence First = Empowers Students

There’s no such thing as being ‘bad at math’ — only bad math experiences. A harsh teacher, embarrassment in class, one bad test — and suddenly your student decides they can’t do it. We rewrite that story. With a supportive tutor who believes in them, ‘I can’t’ becomes ‘I’ve got this.’

“Krishann has improved my daughter’s math skills, but more than that, she’s improved how my daughter feels about math — and that translates to how she feels about herself as a learner. If they had their own school, we would enroll full time.”

— Susan C., Parent (Google)

This is what happens when everything changes.

“It’s such a relief to know that my kids are going to be able to advance in math and science in ways that I personally can’t help them.”

— Alexandra N., Parent

Everything changed for these families.

How do you find the right fit? How do you find a tutor that aligns with your goals? How do you find a reliable, effective company? How do you find a tutor who teaches in a relatable way? Well, the short answer is, look no further. You have found them right here. I hesitated for quite a while to find a tutor for my daughter. She is a great student but lacked confidence in math. Starting her freshman year at an academically challenging high school on Zoom was finally what pushed me to seek outside help. She was doing well but still felt like she didn't really "get it". I was looking for the lightbulb to switch on and Alexander Tutoring is doing just that. They believe, as I do, that math is doable and is not impossible. The key is confidence. They believe there is often a "moment" where a normally confident kid suddenly feels like they "can't do math". A bad grade, a bad teacher, and an embarrassing moment. They work to undo that in a supportive, constructive environment. They are well priced, extremely flexible, and have a large enough staff so your kid can find the tutor with whom they jive. They have been doing remote before the pandemic and have it down to a science. And it's one on one tutoring. We love this program and am so happy we found them!

When my daughter was looking to go beyond her middle school math class, we were fortunate to find Alexander Tutoring. My daughter worked weekly with her fantastic tutor, Jonathan, throughout 7th & 8th grade. He not only helped her fill in the gaps in Algebra I so that she was able to successfully place into Honors Algebra II for high school (her goal!), but was also super flexible and engaged with her in exploring advanced conceptual math (for example, venturing into trigonometry and calculus, and particularly quantum physics) The online platform, which she was apprehensive about at first, worked really well, and she always looked forward to going online for her tutoring sessions. We would absolutely continue with Jonathan in high school, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Alexander Tutoring again to provide support for my younger daughter, who struggles with math, as she heads into middle school.

Sean is an outstanding tutor. He connects with kids, builds their confidence and of course helps them understand and excel at math. When Sean first worked with us, he identified a systematic error our child was making, taught him the correct applications, and our son converted a low score into a 100% on the retake. Our son has worked with Sean for three years and has become a successful, comfortable and confident student. His comprehension and test scores have grown each year. We couldn't be happier with Sean's demeanor, professionalism and skill. --

Finding the right teachers/tutors for my son is not always easy, as he has dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. Alot of educators just don't get it. To that end, I typically, use tutors who work exclusively with kids with learning differences. But I decided to take a gamble on Sean and it paid off. My son was failing Algebra before we started tutoring. We are now going into finals with a chance for an A in the class.

Thank you so much Sean for you help with Diego. He was able to bring his grade up and finished the semester with a B- (from an F). No more academic probation, he is moving on to 12th grade. Update 3 years later: My son is now at Seattle University, second year, doing really well and going to study abroad in Madrid next year!

Sean tutored my son in AP Physics and did a lovely job. My son is gifted in math and in the sciences, but he was jumping into this as the only high school junior in a class of seniors. At the time my son had not completed a calculus class nor had he taken any regular physics prior to enrolling. Sean really helped him fill in any gaps he had. As a tutor Sean was patient, kind, and flexible. Sean can work well with both gifted and challenged kids. I recommend him highly.

Tyler is the best. I decided to basically relearn math from algebra through calculus. I was just tired of not remembering how to do basic math and being embarrassed about it. Plus I wanted to work on some math skills that would be helpful for my job. I started working with Tyler 2-3 months ago and I'm making pretty good progress I think. Tyler approaches the lessons very pragmatically: he has me work on what we'll need later on and we don't just arbitrarily cover every topic. Tyler helps me connect theory to the practical aspects of execution and computation so that I'm actually learning the 'why' behind the work; as an adult learning math that's something I care about a lot. Besides all of that he's fun, energetic, and never makes me feel dumb. Note for any other adults looking to try a similar thing: you will have to put in the work. Tyler keeps me on track, guides my progress, answers my theoretical questions, but it's on me to put in many hours a week of practice problems. I still watch a lot of Khan Academy. If I relied on him to actually teach me every detail, it would take us 3x longer to make progress, though I assume that's a route you could take. We can only move as fast as the amount of work I put in, but it's been fairly easy to stay motivated and I can say I'm actually having fun. Thanks Sean & Tyler!

I wish I had discovered them before my son's senior year of high school. They wanted to make sure my son had the right match and gave us two free lessons until we matched with a third tutor on the third try. The care so much about education and it shows in all the ways they handle themselves. Excellent customer service, showing kindness and thoughtfulness in all of our interactions.

I am an adult looking to go back to school to study Physics. In preparation for that, I have been working with Alexander Sheynis on a variety of math topics. I am thoroughly pleased with my experience. Alexander is professional, always timely, communicative through e-mail and quick to understand my questions, where I might need additional help, etc. I have no hesitation in recommending Alexander Mathematics and Physics tutoring and can't imagine someone being unhappy with the service. It is not inexpensive, but I believe it has been worth every penny and would make the exact same decision over again.

Darren has really helped out our daughter with honors geometry this semester. The great thing about Darren is, as hard as the problems are, he knows how to do them, and he takes the time and has the ability to explain them to our daughter so that she really understands. We are definitely planning to have our daughter work with Darren again next year.

How it Works

Getting started is simple.

Getting support is simple and risk-free. We focus on understanding your student first, then building confidence and momentum step by step.

1. Book Your Risk-Free Lesson

No credit card. No commitment. No catch. Just a conversation about your student — who they are, what they love, and where they’re stuck. After the session, you’ll receive a complimentary skills assessment that pinpoints the foundational gaps holding them back — yours to keep no matter what.

2. Find the Perfect Tutor

The #1 factor in your student’s success isn’t the curriculum — it’s the chemistry. We match based on personality, passions, and learning style. Not the right fit? Try another session at no cost. You get as many trials as it takes. You’ll know when it clicks — you’ll see the fire in their eyes.

3. Watch Everything Change

Your student gets weekly one-on-one mentoring plus nightly office hours for homework help — all backed by our Full Semester Guarantee. No contract. Cancel anytime. Confidence builds. Grades follow.

What actually changes

Most tutoring gets a student through Friday’s test. That’s not what we’re for.

Your student learns where every formula comes from — so a problem they’ve never seen stops being a threat. They stop asking whether something will be on the test and start asking why it works.

What makes your math and physics tutors different?

Your student works with a practicing mathematician, physicist, or engineer — someone who uses this material professionally, not a college student a chapter ahead in the textbook. We recruit nationally because that’s the only way to find them.

What that means for a Marin family:

  • Tutors with graduate-level training and professional research experience
  • A derivation-first method — nothing gets memorized that could be understood instead
  • Nightly office hours, so homework help doesn’t wait for the next session
  • More than 15 years tutoring Bay Area families, with 270+ reviews across Google and Yelp

In Marin specifically, we’ve worked with 54 students across 15 schools — most heavily at The Branson School and Marin Academy, and across the Tamalpais Union district at Redwood, Tam and Archie Williams, plus Terra Linda, San Domenico, Marin Catholic, Mount Tamalpais School, Marin Waldorf, Saint Hilary, Davidson Middle and Del Mar Middle.

All sessions are one-on-one and online.

Nobody’s first session is really about math. It’s about finding out whether this person is going to make them feel stupid again.

Our tutors are matched on personality and interest before subject — a physicist who races bikes, a mathematician who plays in a band. When the match is right, a student stops bracing and starts asking questions. That’s the moment the tutoring actually begins.

If it isn’t right, you get another match at no cost, as many times as it takes. About 80% of our students click on the first try, 95% by the second.

Every level of math and physics, from foundational arithmetic through university coursework, plus chemistry at the high school and AP level:

Sessions are one-on-one and online, built around your student rather than a fixed curriculum. We start by finding out where the gaps actually are, then work forward from there.

Lessons line up with what your student’s school teaches, based on California’s Mathematics Framework. For grade-by-grade detail, see our guides to 7th grade math, 8th grade math standards and 9th grade Algebra 1, or see all of our California tutoring locations.

Yes, though it’s a smaller part of our Marin work. Our young learners come from Mount Tamalpais School in Larkspur, Saint Hilary in Tiburon, Marin Waldorf in San Rafael, San Domenico and Hamilton in Novato.

At this age the math itself is rarely the problem. What we see instead is a story a student has started telling themselves — “I’m bad at math” — and it almost always traces back to a single moment: being called to the board without the answer, a placement in the wrong group, a school change mid-year, an illness that interrupted a unit.

We change that by matching your student with a real mathematician or physicist — someone who can explain a concept five different ways until one lands. Addition through fractions, reinforced with low-pressure drills that build retention without building dread.

Yes. Our Marin middle schoolers come from Davidson Middle in San Rafael, Del Mar in Tiburon, San Domenico, Mount Tamalpais School and others.

Middle school is where Marin math gets consequential, because of what happens at the end of it. Students entering ninth grade in the Tamalpais Union High School District are placed according to a formal ninth-grade mathematics placement protocol — placement assessment scores, prior coursework, and the pathway agreed with a counselor and math teacher. Honors placement runs through its own testing process. The district has also changed its honors program so that Honors Geometry is no longer offered.

Two things follow from that. The placement assessment is a real test with real consequences, and it rewards a student who understands the material rather than one who has memorized a year of procedures. And TUHSD states plainly that it does not recommend outside programs for acceleration or remediation — families asking where to get help are told the district won’t make that recommendation.

So preparation is on you. Grades 6 through 8 are where the foundation gets set — equations and integers, order of operations, proportions and percentages, substitution, measures of central tendency. We derive every equation we use, because a student who understands the derivation isn’t memorizing anymore. They’re reasoning — which is exactly what a placement assessment measures.

This is the bulk of our Marin work. Our largest groups are at The Branson School and Marin Academy, and we work across the Tamalpais Union district at Redwood, Tam and Archie Williams, plus Terra Linda in San Rafael, Novato High, Marin Catholic and San Domenico.

Courses we cover:

  • Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry
  • Precalculus and Calculus, including AP Calculus AB & BC
  • Physics, AP Physics 1, 2 and C
  • Chemistry and AP Chemistry
  • SAT & ACT Math
  • College-level math prep

Marin sets a high bar, and it sets it differently depending on where your student sits. At Branson and Marin Academy the pace is the pressure — the material moves fast and assumes the foundation is already solid. In the Tamalpais district the pressure is placement: the ninth-grade math protocol determines the track, honors placement requires testing, and Honors Geometry is no longer part of the honors program.

We teach students to derive what they’re learning, so they understand the why rather than the how — which is what holds up when a problem doesn’t look like the homework, and what a placement assessment is actually testing.

Preparing for admissions tests? Read how to improve an SAT math score or see our SAT and ACT tutoring.

Yes. College math moves fast and forgives nothing — whether your student is at College of Marin, Dominican, or away at a four-year programme. Lecture halls are large, office hours are crowded, and a single missed week is enough to fall behind for a term.

We cover college algebra, geometry and trigonometry, finite math, statistics, calculus and physics. Every one of our tutors is a working scientist or mathematician with advanced degrees in their field. They’ve taken these courses, and in many cases they’ve taught them.

Because sessions are online, students keep the same tutor when they leave for school — which matters more than it sounds. The first college math course is where most of the damage happens, and continuity through it is worth a great deal.

Yes. Marin professionals come to us to pivot into tech, re-enter school, or sit for a qualifying exam. If you haven’t taken a math course in a decade or more, that can feel daunting. It shouldn’t.

We see a steady stream of adults working toward:

  • Data science, machine learning and quantitative finance roles
  • Graduate program prerequisites and the GRE Quantitative section
  • Actuarial and engineering licensure exams
  • Finishing an undergraduate degree

We build the program around your actual timeline and target — from basic algebra through thermodynamics and nuclear physics. We answer your questions directly and we don’t pretend a topic is simpler than it is. That’s what makes it stick.
