Math and Physics Tutors Who Know San Jose Schools

Your student isn’t “bad at math” — one bad experience convinced them they were. Our specialty is rewriting that narrative into one of confidence, wonder, and joy.

“I have LITERALLY watched frustration melt into absolute understanding of the subject.” — Patrick R., Parent · Read on Google ↗

Everything changes when math empowers students

It’s not tutoring. It’s becoming. Behind every “I’m bad at math” is a student who stopped believing they could figure it out. That belief is the real problem — and it’s the one we solve.

First-Time A's to Ivy League

Our students have been accepted to Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, and Cornell.

When Math Changes Their Future, the Future Changes for Everyone

This is what it looks like.

In 3 minutes, see why we believe math and physics aren’t just school subjects — they’re the keys to everything your student dreams about.

The Alexander Difference

Passion + Purpose = Empowered

When math serves your student’s passion, it has purpose. When it has purpose, something remarkable happens — they become empowered to use education to achieve their dreams.

Personalized Matching = Student Passion

We start by learning what lights your student up — music, sports, art, science, anything. Then we match them with a tutor who shares that passion and shows them how math is the hidden engine behind the things they already love. When math serves something they care about, it stops being a chore.

“Sam has a really nice and easy communication style and once he found out that my daughter loves soccer he added a lot of soccer themes to his teaching (angles, corners, distance etc.). My daughter really liked his style and she was more than happy to continue with Sam as her tutor.”

Deep Understanding = Purpose

Most students survive math by memorizing formulas — until one curveball on the test sinks them. We teach the why behind every equation, deriving formulas and connecting them to the real world. When your student truly understands the math, they can solve anything a teacher throws at them.

“After the first session with Tyler he came home and could not stop talking about Physics… Last week our son came home from a Physics class literally jumping up and down. He had been able to explain a process in class as one of the only ones because Tyler had explained it to him in an interesting conversation they had the day before.”

— Yasmin D., Parent · Read on Google ↗

Confidence First = Empowers Students

There’s no such thing as being ‘bad at math’ — only bad math experiences. A harsh teacher, embarrassment in class, one bad test — and suddenly your student decides they can’t do it. We rewrite that story. With a supportive tutor who believes in them, ‘I can’t’ becomes ‘I’ve got this.’

“Krishann has improved my daughter’s math skills, has also improved how she feels about math, and this translates to improving how she feels about herself as a learner… If they had their own school, we would enroll full time.”

— Susan C., Parent · Read on Google ↗

This is what happens when everything changes.

“It’s such a relief to know that my kids are going to be able to advance in math and science in ways that I personally can’t help them.”

— Alexandra N., Parent

Amazing experience!! First, let me just say that Angelique is an exceptional teacher and an incredible person. She connected with my daughter immediately, fostering trust and developing a genuine bond over time. I believe their connection truly transformed my daughter’s strong aversion to math. Her test scores steadily improved—from the 60s and below to the 80s and 90s. Most strikingly, my daughter now actually looks forward to her weekly tutoring sessions. I highly recommend Alexander Tutoring for their outstanding administration, dedicated teachers, thoughtful approach, and easy-to-use platform. What truly sets them apart from competitors is their commitment to understanding each child’s unique abilities, challenges, and personality. This was a key part of the initial assessment process and helped ensure the perfect instructor match. That made a world of difference for my daughter. (Thank you, Jill!)

My kid has some hesitation when it comes to subjects he doesn't know very well. It's fairly hard to get through to him. Sam, his tutor, was amazingly patient and was able to speak to him in a way that got my kid completely engaged. He looked forward to his tutoring sessions every week - honestly, the learning was a good side benefit. The trick to teaching sometimes is to not seem like you're teaching - and Sam pulled that off amazingly. It was time and money well spent.

We are incredibly grateful for the support, patience, and encouragement provided this semester. What started as a stressful and discouraging experience has completely turned around, not just academically, but emotionally as well. Beyond helping strengthen understanding and confidence in Geometry, the consistent positivity, calm approach, and ability to connect have made such a meaningful impact. Seeing renewed confidence, reduced anxiety around math, and even excitement after assessments has been wonderful to witness as a parent. Krishaan, thank you for not only being an excellent tutor, but also for being someone who truly knows how to motivate and support students through challenges. Your work genuinely makes a difference.

My daughter worked with James near the end of her 4th grade year. She's a bright kid, but math is a subject she was never very interested in. James was able to make it interesting and engaging. I highly recommend these guys if you have a kid that's just not that excited about math.

My son is in 10th grade and he encountered a problem in Math, he couldn't understand the style of teaching that his teacher had, so we found Alexander tutoring and bingo my son started working with Gerald and it was a match made in heaven. Since then he has been able to gain confidence in math and separate the style of teaching from math itself and that has made a huge difference in that signature. The people at Alexander T. are so welcoming and helpful, every time that we needed to make a change in the schedule they were very accommodating and always found a solution. We enrolled my son in a summer intensive with them and with the same tutor Gerald, he is the best we are so grateful for him he has changed my son perception of himself about math and now he knows to separate the teacher from the signature and even more importantly he feels confident about it. I absolutely recommend Alexander Tutoring to anyone, they are the best.

With twin high school students at high academic private schools in San Francisco, finding good tutors in math and science has been critical to my kids' sanity. Sean runs a tight ship and hires terrifically talented tutors that know their stuff and "get" the kids. Highly recommend. PS My kids got into great colleges and yours will too. Sean's tutors helped minimize the stress.

After SF public schools ended their honors math programs I was looking for a way for my 8th grader to qualify for high school honors Math. I am happy to report that Tyler at Alexander Math and Physics tutoring helped my son to test into Algebra 2 honors! His math grade in school went up to an A. Then when we told him he could stop tutoring with Tyler he didn't want to stop tutoring because he enjoyed what he was learning. Wow! My older son is now preparing for the Physics and Math subject tests and Alexander Tutoring is where we are going. I am so thankful to have advanced Math and Physics help for my kids.

This is the first time I've posted a Yelp review, and I hope it is not to our detriment as the word spreads! I have only good things to say about Alexander Tutoring for physics support. Sean Alexander, the founder (also a tutor), has two incredibly talented physics tutors, Olivia and Tyler. They are the BEST, making tough physics concepts comprehensible. Sean is personable, responsive, and accommodating with scheduling. He is also kind, fair, and generous. When Olivia ran just a few minutes late for the first session, Sean took 10 minutes off the hour; and when I asked if he had a referral program, he gave us a free session for referring a friend whose son is now benefiting from weekly physics sessions. He is open to feedback and sincerely wants to help. A rare breed.

Your in great care with Sean! He tutored my college sophomore son in Physics a few years ago with great success. Where is the the proof? In June (2016) my son graduated with a double major in Physics and Econ-Finance -Magna cum Laude at the University of San Francisco. And he did this while also commencing his graduate work as an MSFA in Finance his Senior year and is in the process of completing his graduate degree this December (2016). My son's own success is in large part due to his own determination, intellect, and perseverance; however, I am convinced that Sean played a critical role (at a critical time) in his academic career giving my son the confidence that he could do it! That confidence served as the platform from which my son build his academic standing! Sean is a good as they come.

Sean came highly recommended, and I'm happy to second that recommendation. In her first year of high school, my daughter was struggling with physics, and Sean was able to use his knowledge, skills, and patience to help her learn what she was not learning in class. I found Sean easy to communicate with, and my daughter enjoyed and greatly benefited from her studies with him.

My 8-year-old daughter has always had a love of math, but this all changed when she returned to in-person schooling, after the pandemic. She had fallen behind and struggled to keep up and catch back up and this made her disinterested in math. One of her teachers suggested Alexander Tutoring to help her regain her footing over the summer and she has… and is even further ahead! Thanks to Alexander Tutoring, she’s returned to school this fall with renewed confidence, curiosity, and love of math.

Alexander Tutoring has been a huge help for our 9th grader, who just finished his Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry class with an A after a rocky start to the semester. Tutor Alexander Sheynis has done a great job giving our son the substantive knowledge and confidence to excel on all of the assignments and tests he's had since they started working together. In addition, Alexander's monthly reports are informative for parents, as they let us know what he and our son have been working on, what our son has been doing well, and what he needs to focus on. Communication with Alexander and the Alexander Tutoring team is very easy, and rescheduling is not a problem. Working with Alexander Sheynis and the Alexander Tutoring team has been a total success for our family.

This is our first time using a Math tutor in high school. My son felt a strong and immediate connection with Felix. Felix makes learning fun and explains complex concepts in such a way that helps my son understand. He recently got and 85% and 80% on his two math quizzes where prior to his tutoring, he was getting 50-60% on his quizzes. Felix also is helping Christopher with chemistry. We have also seen improvements in this arena as well. The sessions are pricy (took one star off for that) but worth it as nothing else has moved the needle for my son!

How it Works

Getting started is simple.

Getting support is simple and risk-free. We focus on understanding your student first, then building confidence and momentum step by step.

1. Book Your Risk-Free Lesson

No credit card. No commitment. No catch. Just a conversation about your student — who they are, what they love, and where they’re stuck. After the session, you’ll receive a complimentary skills assessment that pinpoints the foundational gaps holding them back — yours to keep no matter what.

2. Find the Perfect Tutor

The #1 factor in your student’s success isn’t the curriculum — it’s the chemistry. We match based on personality, passions, and learning style. Not the right fit? Try another session at no cost. You get as many trials as it takes. You’ll know when it clicks — you’ll see the fire in their eyes.

3. Watch Everything Change

Your student gets weekly one-on-one mentoring plus nightly office hours for homework help — all backed by our Full Semester Guarantee. No contract. Cancel anytime. Confidence builds. Grades follow.

What actually changes

Most tutoring gets a student through Friday’s test. That’s not what we’re for.

Your student learns where every formula comes from — so a problem they’ve never seen stops being a threat. They stop asking whether something will be on the test and start asking why it works.

What makes your math and physics tutors different?

Your student works with a practicing mathematician, physicist, or engineer — someone who uses this material professionally, not a college student a chapter ahead in the textbook. We recruit nationally because that’s the only way to find them.

What that means for a South Bay family:

  • Tutors with graduate-level training and professional research experience
  • A derivation-first method — nothing gets memorized that could be understood instead
  • Nightly office hours, so homework help doesn’t wait for the next session
  • More than 15 years serving South Bay families, with 270+ reviews across Google and Yelp
  • First-time A’s in Calculus and 700+ SAT Math scores

We work with students across San Jose, Mountain View, Cupertino, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Milpitas and Fremont — at schools including The Harker School, Bellarmine College Preparatory, BASIS Independent Silicon Valley, Archbishop Mitty, Notre Dame San Jose, Evergreen Valley, Mountain View High, Saint Francis, Los Gatos High, Cupertino High, Mission San Jose, San Jose State University and Santa Clara University.

All sessions are one-on-one and online.

Nobody’s first session is really about math. It’s about finding out whether this person is going to make them feel stupid again.

Our tutors are matched on personality and interest before subject — a physicist who races bikes, a mathematician who plays in a band. When the match is right, a student stops bracing and starts asking questions. That’s the moment the tutoring actually begins.

If it isn’t right, you get another match at no cost, as many times as it takes. About 80% of our students click on the first try, 95% by the second.

Every level of math and physics, from foundational arithmetic through university coursework, plus chemistry at the high school and AP level:

  • Pre-Algebra and Algebra I & II
  • Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Precalculus and Calculus (including AP Calculus AB & BC)
  • Statistics and AP Statistics
  • Physics, AP Physics 1, 2, and C
  • Chemistry and AP Chemistry
  • SAT and ACT Math
  • College-level math and physics, including San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and De Anza College
  • Adult learners returning to math

Sessions are one-on-one and online, built around your student rather than a fixed curriculum. We start by finding out where the gaps actually are, then work forward from there.

What students end up with: they enjoy math, they understand concepts deeply rather than memorizing them, and they’re the ones showing friends how to work a problem — which is the real confidence marker.

Lessons line up with what your student’s school teaches, based on California’s Mathematics Framework. For grade-by-grade detail, see our guides to 7th grade math, 8th grade math standards and 9th grade Algebra 1, or see all of our California tutoring locations.

Yes. We’ve worked with young learners from South Bay elementary schools like Harker School (Lower), BASIS Independent Silicon Valley, Stratford School, Willow Glen Elementary, Cadwallader Elementary, East Valley Christian and the German International School of Silicon Valley — where academic standards are high and families invest early in a child’s confidence.

Many young students struggle with math not because they can’t do it, but because of a single discouraging moment: being put on the spot in class, getting lost after a school transfer, or falling behind in a fast-paced classroom.

We match students with real mathematicians and physicists who specialize in breaking complex ideas into accessible lessons. Our elementary sessions focus on:

  • Addition & subtraction
  • Multiplication & division
  • Fractions
  • Confidence-building drills and assessments

Once students feel safe and capable, math becomes fun — and progress follows quickly.

Yes. Our South Bay middle schoolers come from Harker School (Middle), Nueva School, Kennedy Middle in Cupertino, Rancho Milpitas Middle, Herbert Hoover Middle in San Jose, Stratford Preparatory and Helios School in Sunnyvale.

This is the window that decides the high school math track, and in the South Bay that decision carries further than most places. Students placing into Algebra 1 in seventh or eighth grade are the ones who reach AP Calculus BC by senior year — and in districts like Cupertino Union and Fremont Union, that path is crowded and competitive.

Key topics we focus on:

  • Algebraic expressions and equations
  • Integers and rational numbers
  • Ratios, proportions, percent
  • Order of operations
  • Central tendency and data interpretation

We don’t teach shortcuts. We teach understanding. Our tutors emphasize deriving formulas and grasping mathematical logic — the kind of insight that holds up when a student is accelerating rather than just keeping pace.

This is the bulk of our South Bay work. Students attending schools like Harker Upper School, Bellarmine College Prep, BASIS Independent Silicon Valley, Archbishop Mitty, Notre Dame San Jose, Lynbrook, Monta Vista, Evergreen Valley, Mountain View High, Saint Francis, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Mission San Jose, Prospect, Westmont, Branham, Milpitas, Los Altos and Yew Chung International encounter some of the most rigorous academic standards in the country.

To succeed in this environment — and prepare for college admissions — students must master:

  • Algebra I & II
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Precalculus & Calculus
  • AP-level coursework
  • SAT & ACT Math
  • College-level math prep

The South Bay has a particular kind of pressure. In districts like Fremont Union and Cupertino, a large share of students are accelerating, and the ceiling keeps moving — which means a capable student can feel behind while doing perfectly well by any ordinary measure.

We go beyond test prep. We teach students how to derive what they’re learning — so they understand the why, not just the how. That deeper understanding is what holds up when a problem doesn’t look like the homework.

Preparing for admissions tests? Read how to improve an SAT math score or see our SAT and ACT tutoring.

Yes. College math courses at San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and De Anza College can be fast-paced and unforgiving. Oversized lectures and limited TA time leave students overwhelmed and unsure where to turn — and the same is true for South Bay students who’ve left for four-year programs elsewhere.

Our tutors — real scientists and mathematicians — are experts in:

  • College Algebra
  • Geometry & Trigonometry
  • Finite Math
  • Statistics
  • Calculus I, II, III
  • Linear Algebra
  • Physics for STEM Majors

We’ve helped pre-med students, engineering majors and business students navigate demanding coursework with clarity. Sessions are patient, personalized and focused on long-term understanding rather than last-minute survival.

Because sessions are online, students keep the same tutor when they leave for school. The first college math course is where most of the damage happens, and continuity through it is worth a great deal.

South Bay / San Jose professionals often return to math to pivot into tech, re-enter school, or prepare for professional certifications. We work with adults from industries like entertainment, healthcare, real estate, and finance—helping them regain math fluency in a pressure-free environment.

Whether you’re:

  • Taking math prerequisites for nursing or grad school
  • Preparing for the GRE or other entrance exams
  • Transitioning into data science or coding
  • Just trying to feel confident with math again

Our tutors will design a personalized learning path built around your schedule, goals, and current level. From basic algebra to advanced calculus or physics, we support adult learners with patience, clarity, and respect.

At Alexander Tutoring, we know it’s never too late to conquer math—and we’re here to help every step of the way.
