IB Math Tutors for AA and AI Students Aiming at a 7

IB Math moves fast, and the Diploma grades two years of work largely on two or three final papers. One shaky skill from Algebra 2 can cost marks on every one of them. We find that gap first, then train your student on IB-style papers, command terms and the math exploration. Every lesson is one-on-one and online, with a tutor who holds a degree in math, physics or engineering, not a college student.

Meet IB math tutor, surfer and sailor James Magnatta.

A Stony Brook mathematician whose families keep reporting the same thing: math finally makes sense. Parents credit him with first A’s, AP Calculus turnarounds and students who now call math their favorite subject. When he isn’t teaching, he’s usually on the water, surfing or sailing.

James Magnatta — IB math tutor, B.S. Mathematics, Stony Brook. First A’s and AP Calculus wins, and counting.

James Magnatta

IB Math Tutor · B.S. Mathematics, Stony Brook

James earned his B.S. in Mathematics at Stony Brook University with a concentration in operations research, the branch of math that builds models from real data to make decisions. That is close to what IB Math AI asks of students, and the algebra and calculus underneath it are exactly what IB Math AA tests without a calculator.

Parents describe him the same way in review after review: patient, clear, and quick to find the skill that is quietly holding a student back. One daughter who had worked with many tutors earned her first A in math in 11th grade with him. A teenage son who rarely shows enthusiasm for anything told his mother she should sit in on a session to see how good James is. He teaches every level from middle school math through calculus, including AP Calculus and SSAT preparation.

The Alexander Difference

Passion + Purpose = Empowered

When math serves your student’s passion, it has purpose. When it has purpose, something remarkable happens — they become empowered to use education to achieve their dreams.

Read our four-year study of Passion + Purpose tutoring →

Personalized Matching = Student Passion

We start by learning what lights your student up — music, sports, art, science, anything. Then we match them with a tutor who shares that passion and shows them how math is the hidden engine behind the things they already love. When math serves something they care about, it stops being a chore.

“His high school teachers were great, but were not able to provide the depth and level of support that was needed… His grade went from a C- to an A- within the year he was tutoring… His confidence in math has accelerated to a point where he is planning to take a dual enrollment college calculus course next year as a senior in high school.”

— Krystal M., Parent · Read on Google ↗

Deep Understanding = Purpose

Most students survive math by memorizing formulas — until one curveball on the test sinks them. We teach the why behind every equation, deriving formulas and connecting them to the real world. When your student truly understands the math, they can solve anything a teacher throws at them.

“Tyler at Alexander Math and Physics tutoring helped my son to test into Algebra 2 honors! His math grade in school went up to an A. Then when we told him he could stop tutoring with Tyler he didn’t want to stop tutoring because he enjoyed what he was learning.”

— Alexandra N., Parent · Read on Google ↗

Confidence First = Empowers Students

There’s no such thing as being ‘bad at math’ — only bad math experiences. A harsh teacher, embarrassment in class, one bad test — and suddenly your student decides they can’t do it. We rewrite that story. With a supportive tutor who believes in them, ‘I can’t’ becomes ‘I’ve got this.’

“Being a straight A student, it was difficult to accept her lower grades and it affected her confidence… within two sessions, my daughter felt more confident in Algebra, her test scores improved… My daughter had not only improved her grades but also developed a genuine interest in math.”

My son's experience with James M. for AP calculus tutoring was excellent. My teen son is not one to express enthusiasm for much of anything, but nonetheless he made a point of telling me what a really good teacher James is, and even told me once that I should sit in on a session to see for myself. The partnership with AT more than paid off in my son's grades and, more importantly, his mastery of the concepts.

As a senior in high school, my son needed urgent help with his IB French Physics course. He had been struggling on and off with the course since his junior year. With only a month before his IB exams, he did not think he would pass the physics exam. Sean worked with us to find the right tutor for my son. In just 8 sessions, Tyler was able to clarify everything that was giving my son trouble, and he more than just passed his IB exam! Tyler is excellent! We do wish we would have found Sean and Tyler earlier. We highly recommend Tyler and Sean.

Sean offers great tutoring. My son was a Senior in High School, and the AP physics had become very difficult for him. He had become very stressed, and his grades were getting worse at every tests. After starting tutoring with Sean, he started to feel more relax about physics, and had a good grade at his International Baccalaureate. Sean knew how to make him approach the tests in a more relax way. Sean's help was priceless. Thank you, Sean.

We have had an exemplary experience with Alexander Tutoring. My son, Nate, has told me that Rebecca Malas (Chemistry) was able to connect to his visual way of learning. James Magnatta (Pre Calculus) was excellent at breaking down confusing concepts to make them comprehensible. Jill, the "Mission Control Specialist", is always warm, accessible, helpful and easy to work with. Call Alexander if your child needs help. You will not be disappointed.

Alexander tutoring is the whole 9 yards in terms of providing student-centered tutoring for physics and math. Starting from making the right student to tutor match by considering personality and learning styles and focusing on the foundational concepts that establish cumulative learning. Our experience with Alexander Tutoring has been nothing short of excellent. In addition to understanding both physics and calculus concepts that have resulted in improved grades (an A in physics!), my daughter has gained a new found confidence and joy that comes from learning and comprehension. I can’t say enough about the individuals on the Alexander Tutoring team who make this possible every week! Thank you Rebecca (physics) Gerard (calculus), Sean and Jill!

After SF public schools ended their honors math programs I was looking for a way for my 8th grader to qualify for high school honors Math. I am happy to report that Tyler at Alexander Math and Physics tutoring helped my son to test into Algebra 2 honors! His math grade in school went up to an A. Then when we told him he could stop tutoring with Tyler he didn't want to stop tutoring because he enjoyed what he was learning. Wow! My older son is now preparing for the Physics and Math subject tests and Alexander Tutoring is where we are going. I am so thankful to have advanced Math and Physics help for my kids.

Sean worked with my son during the later half of the year for my son's 12th grade AP Physics C course. The course was very difficult, but Sean was able to explain things in ways that made sense to my son, and my son also enjoyed working with him and really felt he "clicked" as far as understanding him personally. My son further said that Sean was a "cool guy who made the tutoring sessions enjoyable" for what was a really tough class. When my daughter was looking to go beyond her middle school math class, we were fortunate to find Alexander Tutoring. My daughter worked weekly with her fantastic tutor, Jonathan, throughout 7th & 8th grade. He not only helped her fill in the gaps in Algebra I so that she was able to successfully place into Honors Algebra II for high school (her goal!), but was also super flexible and engaged with her in exploring advanced conceptual math (for example, venturing into trigonometry and calculus, and particularly quantum physics) The online platform, which she was apprehensive about at first, worked really well, and she always looked forward to going online for her tutoring sessions. We would absolutely continue with Jonathan in high school, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Alexander Tutoring again to provide support for my younger daughter, who struggles with math, as she heads into middle school.

My daughter was feeling wholly defeated and distressed by her Honors Trig & AP Bio classes. To the point she was considering dropping her STEM-focused hopes for college. She started working with Rebecca and that changed everything. Rebecca identified challenges, shored up her foundational skills, and taught her methods and practices that she could build on. My daughter’s confidence and competency made a dramatic about-face, and her outcomes on both tests and transcript reflect that shift. She feels confident about the upcoming challenge of Physics and Statistics next year, knowing Rebecca, and her colleagues at Alexander Tutoring, are available to support her.

This is the Cadillac (or Tesla? Bentley?) of math/science tutors! Tyler helped my child survive AP Physics with a really poor high school teacher. Tyler taught underlying concepts, reinforced necessary Calc lessons, and diagnosed roadblocks before they became problems. He worked with a complicated schedule and was flexible. More importantly - when there were critical tests or problems, Sean and Tyler jumped in and did whatever was necessary to provide emergency Physics triage! As a result: our child learned that hard work, a tough attitude and commitment can get you through ( while several classmates blame the teacher and complain constantly.) And she loves them so much she declined summer vacation so she could spend the month before college starts reviewing Calc and learning to code. They are worth everything.

Alexander Tutoring (AT) is a premium, high-end, math and physics tutoring service. We are extremely grateful to Sean Alexander and the AT staff for helping our de-motivated 16 year old son reverse his declining pre-calculus grade during the COVID-19 pandemic. AT was able to help our son improve by a full letter grade in just four weeks, and was worth every penny we invested in the process. Sean was not only excellent in working with my daughter, he was very organized, reliable and accommodating if I ever had to change the day, or get extra sessions for finals etc.. My daughter has more confidence going into Sophomore year and we couldn't be happier with this excellent tutoring service. Why IB math students stall

IB math students rarely struggle because the content is beyond them. They struggle because the course assumes a fluency nobody gave them time to build. A Math AA student loses marks on Paper 1 not on the calculus but on the algebra inside it, with no calculator to lean on. A Math AI student can run the regression and still can’t say what the result means, which is exactly what the question asks.

Then the Diploma raises the stakes. Every subject is graded 1 to 7, the Diploma needs 24 of 45 points with at least 12 across HL subjects, and the final exams carry 80% of the math grade. One weak HL grade can put the whole Diploma at risk. That is a problem with how the program is paced, not with your student.

So we work in order. Find the real gap, which is usually an earlier skill. Teach the method on clean examples. Then move to past-paper questions from easy to hard, timed, with and without a calculator, and review every lost mark until the same mistakes stop showing up.

What Our IB Math Tutors Cover

Our tutors teach the mathematics first and the exam second. That order matters most in IB, where questions ask students to show, justify and interpret, not just compute.

IB Math, Course by Course

We tutor all four IB math courses, from the first weeks of the Diploma through the final May exams. Here is what each one asks of students and how we help.

IB Math: Analysis and Approaches (AA)

The more abstract of the two courses: algebra, functions, proof and calculus. Paper 1 bans calculators and is worth 40% of the grade at SL and 30% at HL, so weak algebra shows up there first. AA HL is the usual choice for students heading toward math, physics, engineering or economics. We rebuild the hand skills first, logarithms and trig identities included, then practice every topic with and without a calculator (IB mathematics).

IB Math: Applications and Interpretation (AI)

Modelling, statistics and real data, with a graphing calculator on every paper. Students often find the math friendlier and the questions harder to read, because marks depend on choosing the right model and interpreting the result. AI HL goes deep on statistics, matrices and modelling. We teach both the mathematics and the calculator fluency the papers assume.

SL or HL?

Standard Level runs about 150 teaching hours with two exam papers. Higher Level runs about 240 hours and adds Paper 3, a one-hour set of extended problems that rewards students who can work through an unfamiliar idea step by step. Many universities ask for AA HL for math, science and engineering programs, so check requirements early. If your student is unsure, a lesson on recent classwork is often the fastest way to tell whether HL is a stretch or a fit.

The math exploration

The exploration is a written report of 12 to 20 pages, marked by the school and moderated by the IB, and it counts for 20% of the grade. It is the part of the course a student controls most. We help choose a topic with real mathematics in it, plan the work, and meet the five marking criteria on the school’s schedule. The work stays your student’s own, in line with IB academic integrity rules.

Exam preparation

IB exams are held in May, with a November session at some schools. In the months before, lessons shift to timed past papers, mark schemes and a running list of every lost mark and why. After a few papers, the same handful of errors usually accounts for most of them, and those are what we fix first.

IB Math Tutoring FAQ

How much does IB math tutoring cost?

IB math tutoring is part of our monthly plans. Dedicated Tutor is $895/month: a weekly one-on-one session, nightly office hours for homework help, monthly progress reports and direct tutor access between sessions. The Rocket Star Track adds a second weekly session for $1,745/month. No signup fee, no contract, cancel anytime. See all plans.

Do you tutor IB Math AA and Math AI?

Yes, both, at Standard and Higher Level. Math AA leans on algebra, proof and calculus and includes a no-calculator paper. Math AI leans on modelling and statistics, with technology on every paper. Your tutor works from your student's actual course, teacher and exam timeline.

Is IB Math AA or AI harder?

For most students AA is harder: it is more abstract, more proof-based and includes a no-calculator paper. AI HL is still demanding, especially in statistics. AA HL is the usual choice for students heading toward math, physics or engineering, but check the requirements of the universities your student is considering.

Should my student take SL or HL?

HL covers more content, takes about 240 teaching hours instead of 150, and adds Paper 3. It makes sense for students who need it for university plans or who are comfortable with the pace of their current class. A lesson on recent classwork usually shows quickly whether HL is a stretch or a fit.

Can you help with Paper 3?

Yes. Paper 3 on both HL courses is a one-hour set of extended problems that lead students through an unfamiliar idea. We practice reading the setup carefully, spotting where each part builds on the last, and writing clear working that earns method marks.

Can you help with the math exploration?

Yes. Tutors help your student choose a workable topic with real mathematics in it, plan the report, and meet the five marking criteria on the school's deadlines. The work stays your student's own, in line with IB academic integrity rules.

When should my student start IB math tutoring?

Ideally early in the first year of the Diploma, when gaps from earlier courses first show up and are easiest to fix. Many families also start in the months before the May exams, when timed past-paper practice matters most. Either way, the first lesson begins with a skills assessment.

How do online IB math lessons work?

Your student and tutor work one-on-one on a shared digital whiteboard, and the tutor writes the math in real time with a tablet and stylus. Lessons follow your student's class, homework and upcoming tests, with timed IB-style papers as exams approach.

Who are your IB math tutors?

Mathematicians, physicists and engineers with degrees in their field, never college students, including James Magnatta, who holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Stony Brook. Every tutor is ranked nightly on our Rocket Star Rank, so your student is matched with tutors who have already proven it. You can meet the team before you book.

What if tutoring doesn't work?

Dedicated Tutor and Rocket Star Track plans are backed by our Full Semester Guarantee: if you're not satisfied at the end of the term, we refund every penny. Your first lesson is risk-free, so you can see how it works before you commit.

What actually changes

Most tutoring gets a student through Friday’s test. That’s not what we’re for.

Your student learns where every formula comes from, so an unfamiliar Paper 2 question stops being a threat. They stop asking whether something will be on the exam and start asking why it works.

If it doesn’t work, you don’t pay. Period.

We’re so confident in our method that we guarantee your results for the entire semester. If you’re not satisfied at the end of the term, we’ll refund every penny. No fine print. No partial credits. A full refund.

No other tutoring company in the country offers this — because no other tutoring company gets results like ours.
