Do you tutor middle school math and SHSAT prep?
Yes. Our New York middle schoolers come from MS 54 Booker T. Washington, The Lab School MS 312, NEST+m, Wagner Middle School and Mark Twain Intermediate School for the Gifted and Talented in Brooklyn.
In New York, middle school math carries a weight it doesn’t carry elsewhere, because of one exam. Eight of the city’s nine specialized high schools — Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and the rest — admit on the SHSAT score alone. Roughly 27,000 to 29,000 students register each year for about 5,000 to 6,000 offers. Stuyvesant’s cutoff this year was 561.
And the test is changing under families’ feet. It went digital in fall 2025, and beginning with the fall 2026 administration it becomes computer-adaptive — the difficulty adjusts to the student as they go, and once they move past a question within a section they cannot return to it. Strategies built around skipping hard problems and circling back no longer work. What does work is accuracy under pressure, which comes from understanding the material rather than recognising question types.
