SEAN ALEXANDER

Sean discovered a fascination for physics when he was just fifteen, when he proof-read a friend’s report on black holes. In one semester, he read every physics book in his school’s library. He was hooked, but his love of teaching came a bit later.

DEXTER DYSTHE

I believe that the motivation to practice mathematics must be discovered by the individual, and I am excited to watch my students discover what it is about mathematics that gives it purpose to them.

Rebecca Malas

His core teaching principle is that of intuition, focusing heavily on ensuring physics and mathematics comes naturally in the thinking of his students.

Gerald Morgan

GERALD MORGAN

He noticed his strong love for mathematics at the tender age of eight years old. Though difficult, he welcomed the challenge and enjoyed the sense of accomplishment that accompanied solving each equation.

Our Mathematics Tutor James Magnatta

JAMES MAGNATTA

Still teaching as his primary form of income and loving every minute of it. When he is not talking math with students he spends his free time surfing, sailing, exploring, and concocting meals to pass the time.

Master Tutor Angelique Alexander

ANGELIQUE ALEXANDER

Angelique has had two passions both of which she has been lucky enough to study and work in professionally. The first is teaching mathematics, the second is Opera.

Felix-web

FELIX ROJAS

With a B.S degree in Chemistry from The Central University of Venezuela, he started delving into physics and mathematics to take on one of the most fascinating areas of knowledge, Quantum Mechanics, and the application of its concepts in the atomic and molecular world.

ALEXANDER SHEYNIS

Between spaceships, lightsabers, and the mystical powers of the Force (which one later finds out is a fundamental concept that drives all of physics... not the mystical part but the force part), a young boy’s imagination was stolen.

Elementary School

Alexander Tutoring has years of experience tutoring South Bay and San Jose students from Laurel Elementary School, Casa Di Mir Montessori, and St Clare School. We understand that younger students get frustrated with math. Many times we hear "I suck at math". We’ve found this attitude stems from an event in which the student felt embarrassed.

Typical events include

  • Being called to the front of the class while not knowing the answer
  • Placement in the wrong math class
  • Changing schools
  • An injury or life event that interrupted math class

From that event, a narrative begins that creates doubt in a student’s mind. A frustrated student shuts down when it comes to learning math. They simply decide it’s not going to happen.

We change the narrative by matching your student with a real physicist or mathematician. Someone with professional research experience that can explain complex skills at a basic level to younger students. When your student becomes relaxed and confident, real education begins.

At the elementary level, we aim for complete confidence and understanding. Our focus is addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. Our goal is to provide a solid foundation in mathematics on which to build. Sessions include mini-tests, quizzes, and other useful drills to enhance confidence, knowledge, and retention.

Middle School

We tutor math for students at St Simons Parish School, West Valley Middle School, and the Resurrection School.  At the middle school level, it’s important to establish skills to prepare for high school. Grades 6, 7, and 8 introduce a whole new layer of math:

  • Equations
  • Integers
  • Order of operations
  • Proportions
  • Percent
  • Decimals
  • Substitutions
  • Measures of central tendency and variability.

It’s vital students master these skills before high school. Mastery of these topics will set the student up for success in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus.

Many students memorize steps in place of intuitive insight. They are asked to memorize an equation without knowledge of its origin. Our method derives every equation used. That is where the magic of math lies. By deriving each equation, the student gains insight into the foundations of mathematics. They learn that mathematics is the language of our universe. By going deeper your student will have an excellent foundation for high school math classes.

High School

Mathematics expands to a whole new level in high school. We work with high school students at The Kings Academy, Waldorf, St Francis High School, and Living Wisdom High School. High school students must master algebra before delving into more advanced math. Algebra is the gateway to geometry, trigonometry, calculus, precalculus, and physics. Our tutors focus on core concepts like:

  • Complex Numbers
  • Functions
  • Slope
  • Isosceles and equilateral triangles
  • Unit conversions
  • Solving inequalities
  • Parabolas
  • Laws of logic and conditional statements

Our SAT and ACT Masterclasses will increase your score significantly. Attend the college or university of your dreams!

Mathematics is the language of the natural universe that you live in. We strive to teach math in that way to each student. Why? Because it’s awesome! Many schools teach math by simply going through the motions. This makes students resentful because they don’t understand why. Why am I doing this? And that’s a good question.

We show the why behind the equation. We show where the formulas come from. It’s not enough to just write down the Pythagorean Theorem. You should know how to derive the Pythagorean Theorem. It doesn’t come from outer space! Students that engage in math on this level are motivated and inspired. We don’t want you to learn it for a test and forget it. We aim to give you math tools for life.

College & University

Math courses at a college or university can be tough. Palo Alto is home to Stanford, one of the best universities in the country.  Classes are oversized, and it can be difficult to get one-on-one time with the professor or teaching assistant. Courses can move at a breakneck speed, so it’s critical to stay on top of things from class to class and week to week. If you fall off course, it can be difficult to get back on track.

College math is hard. Our tutors are experts in:

  • College Algebra
  • College Geometry
  • College trigonometry
  • Finite Math
  • Statistics
  • College Calculus
  • College Physics

Our tutors are real-world scientists and mathematicians. They have mastered their craft and earned high-ranking degrees and accolades.

At Alexander Tutoring, we recognize some students are afraid to admit they are struggling. Our tutors slow down and encourage students to take it one step at a time. We believe a methodical, organized approach enhances learning and insight. This system teaches giving answers a careful once-over to avoid mistakes. The result is a better course grade and improved understanding.

Adult Math & Physics

Adults in South Bay and San Jose that haven’t had a mathematics course in years may be intimidated. Don’t worry! Our tutors know how to get you back into the game.

For adults returning to college or university, our tutors tailor a study program just for you. Our objective is to ensure you understand the course material and achieve a better grade. From basic algebra to thermodynamics and nuclear physics, our skilled instructors can help older students feel confident about math.

Our teaching method is built on honesty. We will answer your questions without deception or stonewalling. We treat all students the same way we treat each other. Nurturing teaching environments and student-tutor relationships translates to accomplishment.

WHAT PARENTS SAY

"He (her son) asked if he could continue tutoring in math because he was really enjoying how much he was learning."
